Well-Groomed Groom: Rules Of Style

Today’s groom, William, is dropping knowledge about how he set some basic style guidelines for his guys that allowed each one to tailor their own look without them creating a mismatched mess. Photog Erich McVey submitted these pics which detail the guys’ looks, while William lays out the dress code for the groomsmen. The result? A mix of dapper dudes with and without socks, with stripes and with dots. A groomsman in conservative grey mixes in a pale pink tie, while a groomsman in a pink suit works in suspenders and saddle shoes.

From the groom: Well, I wanted classic, and I wanted simple–both for myself and my groomsmen. I trust my dudes absolutely, so I asked them to go two-button with a slim silhouette with not a a lot of break in the hem. And to show me before making any purchases. This allowed each of them to show some personality while giving them the confidence to wear something that fit them and to not have to worry themselves about budget. And it was perfect.

more from William: I purchased ties and pocket squares to bring it all together. Their suits came from brands and designers as different as Indochino, Banana Republic, Topman and Paul Smith. I myself had a tough time finding something I really liked. And then I found Brooklyn Tailors. And I was happy. Daniel’s great. Just about all of my suits will come from there in the future. My tie was also Brooklyn Tailors. My shirt was J. Crew Ludlow, the shoes were from Johnston Murphy (they’re about five-years-old now) and the pocket square was from Tie Bar.

Thank you for sharing your photos with us, Erich, and big thanks for William for breaking down his method for getting a cohesive, but individual look for his group that didn’t break the bank.
