First things first, if you haven’t already entered the Williams-Sonoma $5,000 Dream Wedding Registry Sweepstakes, get on that! Now, onto today’s Q&A.
Q: Hey, there! We’re getting married this year in Charleston. It will be a not-too-formal nautical wedding, and our colors are navy and coral. The groomsmen and I will be wearing seersucker (flat front pants). I’m thinking of ties from High Cotton, maybe madras or something. I’m trying to decide on shoes, as well as suspenders or belts. The bride wants boat shoes, it’s definitely not typical, and I’m not sure if they should be blue or brown. Let me know your thoughts! –Mike
A: Hey, Mike. I didn’t see much in High Cotton’s collection that fits your palette, so I had to do a little web scouring. Coral is so easy to find for bridesmaids, but it’s a lot tougher for the guys. You’ve got a couple of options to achieve a nautical look (with an updated flair), and neither involves socks, so you can ditch that to-do pronto. As for the brown or blue boat shoes, when in doubt, do both. If you’re feeling uneasy about boat shoes, in general, a derby might be a good alternative. Also check out the Gringo Groom for some real groom wearing boat shoes actiton.
A madras bow tie that incorporates navy and coral gets an extra color boost from some other complimentary colors. The groomsmen can wear a denim, polka dot tie with a colored shirt to coordinate, but not match your look. Add in denim suspenders or a rope belt (very nautical) to add a finishing touch. You can mix and match these items to create infinite looks, and of course, you could opt for white shirts for both styles if you’re hesitant to get super colorful.
